What are the typical admission requirements of a nursing school

If you enjoy science, have good communication skills, and like working as a part of a healthcare team, then nursing is just the career for you. Nursing schools will teach you relevant courses that you need to succeed in this field.

Regardless of which nursing school you attend, you will be studying subjects like anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, and the like.

Apart from this, there are certain admission requirements based on the degree or the course you are applying for in any nursing school:

What are the typical admission requirements of a nursing school

  • Introductory science coursework
This coursework is for undergraduate applicants who have completed a full year in general biology and chemistry courses, along with labs. Introductory science coursework introduces students to the basic chemical process and cell biology that includes its structural formation and function of body cells and vertebrae anatomy. Prospective nursing students should have a strong understanding of chemical and biological processes in living organisms. To grow further into the nursing field, the introductory courses require the students to continue on to more advanced science courses like organic chemistry and microbiology.
  • Advanced science coursework
Prospective nursing students should commonly take an anatomy or physiology course beyond the initial biology sequence. They should be able to understand the basic anatomic structure of the human body as well as the complete internal biological process.
  • GED or high school diploma
The minimum requirement to pursue BS/BSN program is GED or a high school diploma. Future nurses should have a strong academic record, particularly in sciences. Most nursing schools require a minimum of 3.5 GPA for admission. Other nursing schools require you to give admission tests like Stanford Achievement Test (SAT). Visit the school website or contact them personally to find more about the admission requirements.
  • Other required coursework
Some programs in nursing require a developmental or abnormal psychology course as well. Some universities recommend taking up 2 semesters of English, Psychology, and Nutrition before applying for BSN nursing program. Other universities require students to take an additional human nutrition course.
